Refuse Collection

The Village of Mukwonago contracts with John's Disposal Service, Inc. to provide garbage and recycling collection to the residents of the Village.  Garbage and recycle collections are paid for through the Village tax levy.  John's Disposal Service also collects brush, leaves, and other yard waste six times during the year.

Who do I contact if my garbage, recycling or yard waste was not picked up?

You must contact John's Disposal (www.johnsdisposal.com) by calling (888) 473-4701.

I just built a new home.  How do I receive toters?

The Village sends John's Disposal a list every month of new addresses.  John's Disposal will deliver them within the first two weeks of the month.  If you have not received the garbage and recycling toters within the first two weeks, you may contact John's Disposal by calling (888) 473-4701.

My toter is too big/small for me.  How do I receive a different size?

John's Disposal will be happy to provide you with a different size toter that will fit your needs.  Please contact John's Disposal by calling (888) 473-4701.

When is the Christmas Tree/Wreath Pickup?

Christmas Trees and wreaths may be disposed of during the large, bulky item pickup, which occurs the first Wednesday of the month, or Thursday if a holiday falls on or precedes the normal collection day.

General Refuse Collection Rules

  • You must use the toters provided by John's Disposal Service, Inc.  If you feel the size of the toter is wrong for your needs, please contact John's to have it exchanged with a different size.

  • All toters must be at least four feet from any other object.  The collection is a streamline collection where an arm is extended from the truck that picks up the toter.  Room is needed for the arm to maneuver.

  • Toters must be out by the curb no later than 6:00 am on the day of collection.

  • On regular trash collection days, only what can fit inside the toter with the lid completely closed will be collected.  Only on the first Wednesday of every month (unless specified under the "Bulky Item Collection" section below) will anything that will not fit be taken.

  • You must recycle.  It is State law.  Also, the Village receives money from the State for recycling, thus limiting money needed through tax collection.

  • Anything that is recyclable can be recycled.

Garbage Collection

Garbage collection days are every Wednesday.  You must have the toters out before 6:00 am on the day of collection.  Collection will be one day late after the following 2011 holidays:  Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Christmas Day.

Recycle Collection

Recycle collection days are every other Wednesday beginning the second week of January 2010.  Collection will be one day late after the following 2011 holidays:  Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Christmas Day.

Electronics Recycle Collection (Old Computers, TVs, etc.)

On September 1, 2010 a new electronics recycling law took effect that prohibits the disposal of various electronic devices such as computers, monitors, printers, televisions, VCRs, DVD players and cell phones in Wisconsin landfills.  The new program called E-Cycle Wisconsin is administered by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and establishes a system for electronics from households and public schools to be collected and recycled.  Many electronics contain harmful materials including mercury, lead and cadmium that are released into the air, water and soil if landfilled, incinerated or illegally dumped.  Electronics contain valuable, reusable materials like glass, metal and plastic that can be recycled for new products.  Reusing these valuable materials lessens environmental impacts by reducing the need for new materials.  Households and public schools can recycle electronics at locations across the state.  Collection sites in Waukesha County include American TV and Appliance stores, Best Buy stores and Goodwill.  Some collectors may charge fees and may not accept all devices.  Contact any collectors beforehand to learn about their policies.
